Silver has always been a material that over time, oxidizes, turning black or yellowish, as is the case in the photo. That should not worry you in the least because the solution is very easy. The oxidation is due to certain elements that interact directly with silver and turn it black, although it is also due to the PH that certain people have that can make it blacken even faster.
How to clean silver at home
It is as simple as always having an old toothbrush on hand, best of those for children that are smaller and softer, just for cleaning silver and having a bottle of bicarbonate. The magic silver cleaning cloth is optional, but it works well to give a special highlight to the piece and remove any stains.
The first thing to do is go to the bathroom, making sure that the sink plug is covered, lest you lose any jewelery during cleaning. You put the jewel to clean in your hand, the baking soda and dry, start brushing it.
You will see in a short time that it is getting bright. You can wash it later with a little soapy water and dry it carefully. It will be ready so that you can wear it immediately. You may have noticed that some websites recommend doing it wet, but for me, the problem when wet is that the bicarbonate cakes and half dilutes and it does not clean all the surfaces well. But if it has been blackened for a longer time, then the use of wet bicarbonate if it is more effective, you can prepare a bath with the pieces, in warm water with bicarbonate and it will be necessary to leave them for about 20 minutes. Then you have to rub them with the brush, and rinse them with a little soap or plain water.
There is also the so-called magic cloth, which is used to polish silver pieces, it is done dry and it is also quite effective, it can be used even after the bicarbonate bath or used on rigid chains, where it is more difficult to apply the dry bicarbonate. You will find liquid products indicated to polish silver and that you simply have to submerge the pieces for a few minutes, but continued use means that in the end they do not look so much, at least from what we have experienced. If it is recommended that from time to time, and we mean once a year or every two, you do a professional polishing done by a jeweler, who will leave the piece as if it were just acquired. To keep them clean for a longer time, oxidation must be avoided, so the best solution is to keep them in a separate bag, inside your jewelry box. You will see that they last much longer clean. Jewelry that is enameled does not suffer any damage from coming into contact with bicarbonate, as it is a thin layer of glass. Likewise, the pearls or zircons of our jewelry will not suffer damage with the bicarbonate. You will tell us if the advice has been good for you.
